Early Miocene to Pliocene, 5-23 million years old

This is a real fossil.

Megalodon, whose name translates to "big tooth," is an extinct shark species that inhabited the oceans from roughly 23 to 5 million years ago, spanning the Early Miocene through the late Pliocene epochs. Previously classified within the Lamnidae family, it was considered closely related to the great white shark. As one of the most formidable predators in Earth’s history, megalodon continues to intrigue scientists and the public alike. However, questions remain concerning whether it was merely an oversized great white and if it might persist in the unexplored ocean depths.

Megalodon fossils (Otodus megalodon, formerly classified as Carcharodon or Carcharocles megalodon) date back approximately 20 million years. This massive shark ruled the oceans for about 13 million years before becoming extinct around 2.6 million years ago. Known as the largest shark and one of the biggest fish known, megalodon is estimated to have reached lengths of 15 to 18 meters, about three times longer than the largest great white shark. Since no complete skeleton has been found, these estimates are derived from the size of its teeth, which can grow up to 18 centimeters. The name megalodon means “large tooth,” and these teeth offer valuable information about the diet of this giant predator.
