Early Miocene to Pliocene, 5-23 million years old
Megalodon, meaning “big tooth”, is an extinct species of shark that lived approximately 23 to 5 million years ago, during the Early Miocene to the end of the Pliocene. It was formerly thought to belong to the family Lamnidae, making it closely related to the great white shark. As one of the largest predators to have ever lived, megalodon captures people’s imagination — and for good reason. But was this apex predator simply a beefed-up great white shark, and is it still lurking in the dark depths of the ocean?
Megalodon fossils, scientifically known as Otodus megalodon and once classified as Carcharodon or Carcharocles megalodon, date back 20 million years. This giant shark ruled the oceans for 13 million years before disappearing 2.6 million years ago. As the largest shark and one of the biggest fish ever, megalodon likely measured between 15 and 18 meters—three times the length of today’s great white sharks. These impressive size estimates come from their massive teeth, which can reach up to 18 centimeters long. Owning a megalodon tooth fossil connects you to this incredible prehistoric predator, offering a tangible link to Earth’s ancient marine giants and their fascinating history.
