Early Miocene to Pliocene, 5-23 million years old
This is a real fossil.
The Megalodon, whose name translates to “big tooth,” is an extinct shark species that thrived around 23 to 5 million years ago, from the Early Miocene through the end of the Pliocene. Previously believed to be part of the Lamnidae family, it is closely linked to the great white shark. Renowned as one of the largest predators in Earth's history, the Megalodon continues to captivate fascination. Yet, questions remain whether it was merely an exaggerated great white or if it still prowls the ocean’s hidden depths.
Fossil evidence of Megalodon (Otodus megalodon, formerly classified as Carcharodon or Carcharocles megalodon) dates back approximately 20 million years. This apex predator reigned over marine ecosystems for about 13 million years before its extinction around 2.6 million years ago. Otodus megalodon ranks not only as the largest known shark but also among the largest fish to have lived. Current estimates place its length between 15 and 18 meters—roughly triple that of the largest documented great white shark. Due to the absence of a complete skeleton, these size approximations are derived from its fossilized teeth, which can measure up to 18 centimeters. The term “megalodon” reflects this characteristic, meaning “large tooth.” These teeth provide critical insights into its feeding behavior and ecological role.
