Early Miocene to Pliocene, 5-23 million years old

This is a real fossil.

The Megalodon—meaning “big tooth”—ruled the seas from around 23 to 5 million years ago, spanning the Early Miocene to the Pliocene. Once assumed to be a member of the Lamnidae family and closely linked to the great white shark, this colossal predator ignites curiosity as one of history’s fiercest hunters. Was it just an oversized great white, or does this legendary apex predator still prowl the ocean’s darkest depths, waiting to be discovered?

The earliest Megalodon fossils (Otodus megalodon, formerly classified as Carcharodon or Carcharocles megalodon) date back around 20 million years. For the next 13 million years, this massive shark dominated the oceans until it became extinct about 2.6 million years ago. Otodus megalodon was not only the largest shark but also one of the biggest fish to have ever lived. Scientists estimate it measured between 15 and 18 meters long, roughly three times the size of the largest great white shark recorded. Since no complete Megalodon skeleton has been found, these estimates rely on the size of its teeth, which can be as long as 18 centimeters. The name Megalodon itself means “large tooth,” and these teeth provide valuable insights into the diet of this prehistoric giant.
