Fulgurite is nature’s electric masterpiece, formed when lightning crashes into sandy soil or dunes, fusing sand grains into striking tubes and branches of natural glass. Known as petrified or fossilized lightning, this rare geological marvel reveals the raw power of storms. The vast Sahara Desert in Algeria, with its endless sands and frequent lightning, is a prime stage for these incredible formations. From fragile, slender tubes to bold, sprawling branches, fulgurites are proof of lightning’s fierce touch etched into the earth.

Fulgurites are composed mainly of silica, which is the primary component of sand. When lightning strikes the ground, temperatures can reach up to 30,000 degrees Celsius (54,000 degrees Fahrenheit), causing the sand to melt and fuse rapidly. The resulting fulgurite structures preserve the shape and texture of the surrounding sand grains.
