Early Miocene to Pliocene, 5-23 million years old

The name Megalodon, meaning “big tooth,” refers to an extinct shark species that inhabited the oceans from roughly 23 to 5 million years ago, spanning the Early Miocene through the close of the Pliocene epoch. Once classified within the Lamnidae family, it was considered closely allied to the great white shark. Renowned as one of the most formidable predators in history, Megalodon continues to intrigue and captivate. Yet, questions persist: was this apex predator merely a magnified version of the great white, or does it still dwell unseen in the ocean’s shadowy depths?

The earliest fossils of Megalodon (Otodus megalodon, formerly classified as Carcharodon or Carcharocles megalodon) originate from approximately 20 million years ago. Over the subsequent 13 million years, this colossal shark was a dominant marine predator until its extinction around 2.6 million years ago. Megalodon holds the distinction of being the largest shark species and one of the biggest fish known to science, estimated to have reached lengths between 15 and 18 meters—about three times the size of the largest great white shark. Because a complete skeleton has not been discovered, these size estimations rely on the dimensions of fossilized teeth, which can measure up to 18 centimeters. The name “megalodon” translates to “large tooth,” highlighting the significance of these fossils in reconstructing its feeding behavior and ecological role.
