Stegosaurus was one of several plated dinosaurs that lived during the Late Jurassic Period, around 150 million years ago. It is easily recognized by its spiked tail and the series of large, triangular bony plates along its back. The skull and brain were very small compared to its large body size. Its forelimbs were much shorter than its hind limbs, giving the back a distinctively arched appearance, and it had short, broad feet. Stegosaurus had two parallel rows of plates, either staggered or paired, which protected its backbone and spinal cord. These rows contained 17 to 22 separate plates and flat spines, with the largest measuring about 60 centimeters tall and wide. In addition to the back plates, these massive plant-eaters possessed long spikes at the end of their tails, likely used for defense.
