Early Miocene to Pliocene, 5-23 million years old

The Megalodon, which translates to “big tooth,” is an extinct shark species that existed from roughly 23 to 5 million years ago, spanning the Early Miocene through the end of the Pliocene epoch. It was once classified within the Lamnidae family, closely related to the great white shark. As one of the largest predatory sharks in history, the Megalodon continues to intrigue researchers and the public alike. Questions persist about whether it was merely a giant great white variant and if it might still inhabit the unexplored ocean depths.

Megalodon fossils, classified as Otodus megalodon and once known as Carcharodon or Carcharocles megalodon, first appeared around 20 million years ago. This giant shark ruled the oceans for about 13 million years before going extinct approximately 2.6 million years ago. Megalodon was not only the largest shark but also one of the biggest fish to have ever lived, with size estimates ranging from 15 to 18 meters—about three times the length of the largest great white shark. Since no full skeleton has been discovered, these estimates rely on the size of its teeth, which can grow up to 18 centimeters long. The name Megalodon means “large tooth,” and these fossils provide important clues about the diet and behavior of this ancient predator.
