Botryoidal Hematite
Hematite, an abundant iron oxide mineral, presents hues ranging from steel gray to deep black, particularly in its specular form. The rainbow variety reveals iridescent colors reminiscent of oil slicks, often reinforced with a quartz backing in its drusy manifestation to enhance durability. Despite its variations, all forms exhibit a characteristic rust-red streak. Harder than pure iron yet more brittle, hematite derives its name from the Greek “haimatites,” meaning blood. It is sourced globally—in Australia, Brazil, England, Mexico, the United States, and Canada—and is notably Alabama’s state mineral, with extensive mining history. Beyond Earth, hematite imparts Mars with its signature red hue, first detected by the Mars Global Surveyor’s Thermal Emission Spectrometer.
