Albertosaurus, Gorgosaurus, And Daspletosaurus
During the Late Cretaceous period in northern North America, several notable tyrannosaurs roamed the region, including Albertosaurus, Daspletosaurus, and Gorgosaurus. Fossils of these predatory dinosaurs have been discovered in formations such as the Judith River in Montana and various sites in Alberta, Canada. As early relatives of the iconic Tyrannosaurus rex, which appeared at the very end of the Cretaceous, these tyrannosaurs were smaller than T. rex but still formidable predators.
Both Daspletosaurus and Gorgosaurus were similar in size, measuring around 30 feet in length and weighing up to 5,000 pounds, and they coexisted in the same ecosystems. Albertosaurus was also approximately 30 feet long but had a lighter build, with an estimated maximum weight of 4,000 pounds. These large carnivores played a key role as apex predators, hunting herbivorous dinosaurs and shaping the Late Cretaceous ecosystems of northern North America.
