Stegosaurus was one of several plated dinosaurs that lived during the Late Jurassic Period, around 150 million years ago. It is easily recognized by its spiked tail and a distinctive double row of large, triangular bony plates running along its back.
Despite its large size, Stegosaurus had a small skull and brain, and its forelimbs were much shorter than its hind limbs, giving it a characteristic arched back. Its feet were short and broad, suited for supporting its massive body.
The back featured 17 to 22 plates, arranged either staggered or paired, which likely served for protection, display, or thermoregulation. The largest of these plates measured about 60 centimeters in height and width. At the end of its tail, Stegosaurus had long, sharp spikes, known as the thagomizer, used for defense against predators.
