Stegosaurus was one of various plated dinosaurs that lived during the Late Jurassic Period around 150 million years ago. It is recognizable by its spiked tail and series of large triangular bony plates along its back. The skull and brain were quite small for such a large animal. The forelimbs were considerably shorter than the hind limbs, giving the back its distinctively arched look. They had short, broad feet. Stegosaurus had two parallel rows of plates, either staggered or paired, which protected the animal’s backbone and spinal cord. These rows included between 17 and 22 separate plates and flat spines. The largest plates were about 60 cm tall and wide. In addition to the backplates, these large plant-eaters had long spikes at the end of their tails.
