Name: Mosasaurus

Named By: Dollo - 1889.

Size: Depending upon the species, Mosasaurs could range between 6 and possibly just under 14 meters in length.

Known locations: Fossil locations suggest a worldwide distribution, but are especially well-known from Europe and North America.

Time period: Campanian to Maastrichtian of the Cretaceous.

Mosasaurs, the largest lizards to ever exist, could reach nearly 60 feet long with skulls measuring 6 feet. Masters of the ocean, they thrived as fierce swimmers, gliding through the seas with powerful, elongated bodies. Their finned tails propelled them forward while their small, webbed feet steered with precision. These formidable predators dominated the late Cretaceous period, from 96 to 65 million years ago, hunting fish, turtles, and shellfish. Living alongside dinosaurs, they met their end during the catastrophic Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction, leaving behind a legacy of prehistoric power.
