Name: Halisaurus

Type: Carnivore / Piscivore

Size: 3 to 4 meters in length.

Halisaurus is an extinct genus of marine reptiles in the mosasaur family, which lived during the Maastrichtian stage of the Late Cretaceous period. This medium-sized mosasaur weighed between 200 and 350 kg and was a relatively weak swimmer compared to other mosasaurs. As a mid-level predator, Halisaurus primarily hunted fish and squid in open waters. Its specialized jaws featured flexible joints that allowed it to open wide, and its pterygoid teeth helped secure prey while swallowing it whole. With teeth designed to pierce rather than slice, Halisaurus was uniquely adapted to consuming prey without chewing, making it an intriguing example of Cretaceous marine predation.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried underground for millions of years under immense pressure can be quite harsh. Rarely does a fossil emerge fully intact and perfect. Most fossils have been restored to some extent, and some are even modified by humans to improve their appearance. In Morocco, workers perform their jobs professionally when uncovering and conserving these natural treasures. However, natural cracks are often visible on the surface, which are part of the fossil's natural beauty and are not seen a flaws.
