Early Miocene to Pliocene, 5-23 million years old
Megalodon, meaning “big tooth,” was a giant extinct shark that lived approximately 23 to 5 million years ago, from the Early Miocene to the end of the Pliocene. Once thought to be closely related to the modern great white shark, Megalodon was far larger, making it one of the largest and most powerful predators in history.
Estimates suggest it grew to 15–18 meters long, nearly three times the size of the largest great white shark, with massive serrated teeth up to 18 centimeters long. These teeth reveal Megalodon’s apex predatory behavior, adapted for crushing bones, tearing large fish and whales, and dominating marine food chains.
Megalodon inhabited warm coastal waters, continental shelves, and open oceans around the world. Fossils found on every continent show it had a near-global distribution and could migrate long distances to pursue prey. Its presence shaped prehistoric marine ecosystems, controlling populations of large fish and marine mammals for over 13 million years.
Today, Megalodon fossils—particularly its teeth—are highly prized by collectors and paleontologists alike. Each specimen provides a window into prehistoric oceans, revealing the scale, strength, and hunting dominance of one of the greatest predators to ever live.
