The Hastalis Mako (Isurus hastalis) was a formidable shark that roamed the seas during the Miocene epoch, around 11–5 million years ago. Growing up to 4 meters (13 feet) long, this fast-swimming predator had a streamlined body, a pointed snout, and sharp, blade-like teeth perfect for seizing prey. Fossil discoveries across the United States, Europe, and South America reveal its wide distribution in ancient oceans. As a dominant open-water hunter, Isurus hastalis likely fed on fish, squid, and small marine mammals, cementing its role as one of the most efficient predators of its time.


The teeth of Hastalis are similar to those of modern-day mako sharks, but they are larger and have a more robust shape. The species was originally classified as a member of the Isurus genus, but it has since been reclassified as a separate genus due to its distinct features.
