Calcite is a calcium carbonate mineral with a Mohs hardness of 3, found in a wide variety of forms and colors across every continent. It forms the major component of marble and limestone. Yellow Calcite usually occurs in massive rather than crystalline form, with the finest specimens originating from Mexico.
The name “Calcite” comes from the Greek word chalix, meaning lime. This mineral appears in colors including red, green, orange, yellow, blue, pink, clear, black, and white. Calcite forms in diverse geological environments, and some varieties fluoresce blue or red under UV light. Its uses are extensive: it has been employed in cement and mortar production, while very clear, translucent calcite has been used in gun sights and polarizing microscopes.
