Perisphinctes Ammonite
Ammonites were marine mollusks that lived in the world’s oceans from about 240 to 65 million years ago, disappearing during the same mass extinction that ended the age of dinosaurs. Their coiled, chambered shells, often adorned with ribs and intricate patterns, make them among the most recognizable and widespread fossils ever discovered. The name ammonite is derived from the Egyptian god Ammon, who was depicted with curving ram’s horns resembling their shells. As members of the cephalopod family, ammonites were related to modern squid, octopuses, cuttlefish, and nautiluses, sharing similar predatory habits and agility in the sea.
