Cretaceous Age 100.5 - 66 million years old.
Raptors were carnivorous dinosaurs that lived during the Cretaceous Period, approximately 100.5 to 66 million years ago. The first fossil remains of this species were discovered by Peter Kaisen in the Gobi Desert on August 11, 1923. A year later, it was officially named Velociraptor, a name derived from the Latin words “Velox” meaning swift and “Raptor” meaning thief or robber.
Although Velociraptor became world-famous through the Jurassic Park film series, the creatures shown on screen differ greatly from the real dinosaurs. The movie version was actually inspired by a related species, Deinonychus, rather than true Velociraptors. In reality, Velociraptors were about the size of a turkey, covered in feathers, and far smaller than the man-sized reptiles portrayed in the films. On average, they stood just over 3 feet tall and weighed around 30 pounds.
Another interesting fact about Velociraptor is that it was likely not as fast as portrayed in the Jurassic Park films. Scientific estimates suggest that these dinosaurs could reach a top speed of around 40 miles per hour, which is slower than a cheetah (about 60 mph) or a lion (around 50 mph), yet still faster than a human at full sprint (approximately 28 mph). Despite being slower than popular depictions, their agility and quick reflexes would have made them effective and efficient predators.
Recent research suggests that Velociraptor likely hunted and scavenged small animals. Its diet probably included reptiles, small mammals, insects, and smaller dinosaurs. Although movies often depict it as an aggressive hunter, it was probably more of a scavenger than a hunter.
