Pterosaurs were the remarkable flying reptiles of the extinct clade Pterosauria, thriving throughout the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods of the Mesozoic Era, approximately 228 to 66 million years ago. They represent the earliest vertebrates to develop powered flight, with wings composed of a membrane of skin, muscle, and connective tissues extending from the ankles to an elongated fourth finger. Early species featured long, fully toothed jaws and extended tails, while later species exhibited reduced tails and, in some cases, the absence of teeth. Their bones were hollow and filled with air, similar to birds, allowing for greater muscle attachment relative to skeletal weight. The delicate, thin bone walls supported a prominent keeled breastbone for flight muscle attachment and an enlarged brain to manage sophisticated flying capabilities.
