Pterosaurs were flying reptiles from the extinct group called Pterosauria that existed throughout the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods of the Mesozoic Era, roughly 228 to 66 million years ago. They are the first vertebrates known to have developed powered flight. Their wings consisted of a membrane made of skin, muscle, and other tissues that stretched from their ankles to an elongated fourth finger. Early pterosaurs had long jaws filled with teeth and long tails, while later species had shorter tails and some had no teeth. Their bones were hollow and filled with air, similar to birds, allowing for strong muscle attachment with less weight. They also had thin bone walls, a large keeled breastbone to support flight muscles, and a well-developed brain for controlling complex flight movements.
