Early Miocene, 5-11 million years old

Hastalis Mako (Isurus hastalis) was a large, fast-swimming shark that lived during the Miocene epoch, about 11–5 million years ago. Growing up to 4 meters (13 feet) in length, it had a sleek, streamlined body, a pointed snout, and sharp teeth for capturing prey. Fossil evidence of Hastalis has been found in the United States, Europe, and South America, revealing its wide distribution. As a dominant open-ocean predator, it likely fed on fish, squid, and marine mammals, making it one of the top hunters of its time.

Hastalis teeth closely resemble those of present-day mako sharks but are notably larger and more robust. Originally placed within the Isurus genus, Hastalis has been reclassified into its own genus because of its distinctive traits. This species plays a key role in studying the evolution and diversity of ancient sharks and helps illuminate the predator-prey interactions in prehistoric marine environments.
