Metacanthina Issoumourensis

Trilobites were an extinct group of marine arthropods belonging to the class Trilobita and are considered one of the earliest known groups of arthropods. They first appeared approximately 521 million years ago during the Early Cambrian period, marking the start of the Atdabanian stage. These hard-shelled, segmented creatures inhabited the ancient oceans of Earth and represent some of the planet’s earliest complex life forms, serving as iconic representatives of the Paleozoic Era. Trilobites became extinct long before the rise of dinosaurs.

One of the most distinctive features of trilobites was their exoskeleton, the earliest known skeletal structure in animals, which allowed their remains to be fossilized exceptionally well. Their bodies were divided lengthwise into three lobes: a central axial lobe flanked by two pleural lobes, giving rise to the name trilobite, meaning “three-lobed.”

The trilobite body was organized into three primary sections. The cephalon, or head, contained compound eyes, mouthparts, and sensory organs such as antennae, which helped them navigate and detect their surroundings. The thorax, or middle section, consisted of multiple overlapping segments—ranging from two to sixty-one—that provided flexibility and mobility. The pygidium, or tail section, was formed from fused segments that offered protection and stability. Together, these adaptations made trilobites highly successful marine organisms and left a rich fossil legacy that continues to illuminate the history of early life on Earth.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. The workers in Morocco do a very professional job of unearthing and preserving these natural treasures; however, natural cracks are visible on the surface. These are part of the natural beauty of the fossil and are not considered defects.
