Prognathodon is an extinct genus of marine lizards within the mosasaur family that thrived during the Cretaceous Period, approximately 100 to 66 million years ago. Characterized by a powerful and robust jaw, Prognathodon possessed the musculature necessary to exert significant bite forces, enabling it to prey upon hard-shelled organisms such as ammonites, turtles, and shellfish. Its teeth were exceptionally strong and specialized for fracturing protective shells and slicing flesh, featuring serrations visible upon close examination. Additionally, all species exhibit sclerotic rings that preserve corneal shape and reinforce the sclera. Notably, Prognathodon differs from Mosasaurus in possessing fewer teeth, distinguishing it within the mosasaur clade.
