Early Miocene, 5-11 million years old

The Hastalis Mako (Isurus hastalis) was a powerful shark that thrived during the Miocene epoch, roughly 11 to 5 million years ago. Reaching lengths of up to 4 meters (13 feet), this ancient mako was built for speed, with a sleek, torpedo-shaped body, a pointed snout, and razor-sharp teeth designed for slicing through prey. Fossil evidence of Isurus hastalis has been uncovered across the globe, including in the United States, Europe, and South America, highlighting its wide distribution. As a top predator of the open ocean, it likely hunted fish, squid, and even small marine mammals, securing its role as one of the dominant hunters of its time.

Hastalis teeth resemble those of contemporary mako sharks but are notably larger and more solid in form. Initially grouped under the Isurus genus, Hastalis was later assigned its own genus because of its unique characteristics. This species plays a key role in studying the evolution and variety of ancient sharks and sheds light on the predator-prey dynamics within prehistoric marine ecosystems.
