Plesiosaur Zarafasaura

Zarafasaura Oceanis is a fascinating member of the Elasmosauridae family, known for its long neck and streamlined marine body. Its name combines Zarafa, Arabic for “giraffe,” and Saurus, Greek for “lizard,” with the species name meaning “daughter of the sea.” First described in 2011 by Dr. Peggy Vincent and colleagues at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, Zarafasaura is based on incomplete skull fossils found in Morocco.

This carnivorous marine reptile grew to about 23 feet (7 meters) and lived during the Late Cretaceous period (72–66 million years ago). Its long neck and agile body made it an efficient predator of fish and other marine life.

Zarafasaura is part of the broader Plesiosauria family, which existed from 228–61.6 million years ago. Fossils of 938 specimens have been discovered, highlighting their diversity. Many artistic depictions of plesiosaurs are influenced by myths, including the Loch Ness Monster, blurring scientific distinctions between genera.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried underground for millions of years under immense pressure can be harsh. No fossil emerges fully intact; most require some restoration, and some are even modified to improve their appearance. Moroccan workers excel at carefully excavating and preserving these natural treasures, though surface cracks are often visible. These cracks are natural features and are not viewed as flaws.
