Fulgurite is a type of natural glass formed when lightning strikes sandy soil or dunes, creating a unique geological phenomenon. This process occurs when the intense heat generated by a lightning bolt fuses the grains of sand together, resulting in the formation of fulgurite tubes or branches. Petrified lightning, also known as fossilized lightning or lightning rock, is another term used to describe fulgurite.
The Sahara Desert in Morocco is one of the regions where fulgurites are found. Its vast sandy terrain and frequent thunderstorms provide ideal conditions for their formation. Fulgurites vary in size, from small, delicate tubes to larger, branching structures.
Composed primarily of silica, the main component of sand, fulgurites form when lightning strikes the ground. Temperatures can reach up to 30,000 °C (54,000 °F), melting and fusing the sand grains almost instantly. The resulting structures preserve the shape and texture of the surrounding sand, creating a natural record of the lightning strike.
