100 million years old Cretaceous Age.
This exquisitely preserved fossil shrimp (Carpopenaeus) rests beautifully within its natural limestone matrix. Dating back to the Cretaceous period, approximately 100 million years ago, it represents a stunning window into ancient marine life. The Greek historian Herodotus once described such discoveries as “fish in the stones,” a poetic nod to the remarkable fossils found in Lebanon’s limestone beds. Unlike many other specimens, this shrimp remains untouched by restoration or color enhancement, retaining its authentic form and detail.
The Cretaceous limestone deposits of Lebanon—notably those of Sahel Alma, Hajoula, and Haqel—are celebrated for their exceptional preservation and diversity. Comparable in quality to the world-famous Solnhofen fossils of Germany, these sites yield fossils that often share the same color as the surrounding rock. While they are best known for delicately preserved fish, these deposits also reveal a wealth of invertebrate life, including shrimp and lobsters, offering a rare glimpse into the ancient seas of the Middle Cretaceous.
