Prognathodon is an extinct genus of marine lizards within the mosasaur family that existed during the Cretaceous period, approximately 100 to 66 million years ago. This genus is characterized by a robust, powerful jaw capable of generating significant bite force, adapted for consuming hard-shelled prey such as ammonites, turtles, and shellfish. Its teeth are notably strong, designed to crush protective shells and shear flesh, with serrations visible upon close examination. A distinctive anatomical feature across all Prognathodon species is the presence of sclerotic rings, which maintain corneal shape and support the sclera. Unlike Mosasaurus, the Prognathodon species possesses a relatively reduced number of teeth.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:
Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. The workers in Morocco do a very professional job of unearthing and preserving these natural treasures; however, natural cracks are commonly visible on the surface. These are part of the natural beauty of the fossil and are not considered defects.
