Prognathodon is an extinct genus of marine lizards from the mosasaur family that lived during the Cretaceous period, approximately 100 to 66 million years ago. It had a strong, heavy jaw capable of delivering significant bite force, powered by robust jaw muscles. This adaptation allowed it to specialize in feeding on hard-shelled prey like ammonites, turtles, and shellfish. Its teeth were well-suited for crushing shells and shearing flesh, featuring serrations visible under close examination. Prognathodon species also possessed sclerotic rings that helped maintain corneal shape and support the sclera. A distinguishing feature of Prognathodon compared to other mosasaurs is its relatively limited number of teeth.
