100 - 66 Million Years old, Upper Cretaceous, Maastrichtian Epoch.

Name: Prognathodon

Type: Carnivore

Size: 6 to 14 meters in length

Prognathodon was a powerful marine reptile from the mosasaur family that dominated the seas during the Cretaceous period, 100 to 66 million years ago. Its strong, heavy jaw delivered an impressive bite, perfectly suited for crushing tough prey like ammonites, turtles, and shellfish. The teeth were specially adapted to break shells and slice through flesh, with serrations visible upon close inspection. Unique sclerotic rings helped maintain sharp underwater vision. With fewer teeth than other mosasaurs, Prognathodon stood out as a remarkable and effective predator—an extraordinary example of prehistoric evolution.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. The workers in Morocco do a very professional job, of unearthing and preserving these natural treasures, however, commonly natural cracks are visible on the surface. These are part of the natural beauty of the fossil and are not considered defects.
