This is a real Gastrolith.
Gastrolith stones found in the Cloverly Formation are actually polished stomach stones from large dinosaurs, specifically Sauropods like Titanosaurs. These beautiful stones, known as gastroliths, are rare and found only in a few locations in Southern Montana. Authenticating a sauropod gastrolith requires thorough scientific validation. The stone must come from a different geological formation than the dinosaur's environment, confirming it wasn't naturally found at the site. True gastroliths show characteristic smoothing and polishing from tumbling in the digestive system—a process similar to rock polishing. Most importantly, the specimen must be found directly with dinosaur bones to eliminate other causes like erosion by water or wind. Without this contextual proof linking the stone to the skeleton, even well-polished specimens remain scientifically uncertain. This 2.8-inch example meets all these strict criteria and is accompanied by documentation proving its origin and connection to sauropod remains.
