Calcite is a calcium carbonate mineral with a Mohs hardness of 3, found in a wide variety of forms and colors across every continent. It is a primary component of both limestone and marble. Yellow Calcite usually occurs in massive formations rather than as individual crystals, with the finest specimens coming from Mexico.
The name “Calcite” comes from the Greek word chalix, meaning lime. Calcite exhibits an extensive range of colors, including red, green, orange, yellow, blue, pink, clear, black, and white. It forms in diverse geological environments and in many different shapes. Certain varieties even fluoresce under UV light, appearing blue or red. Calcite has been widely used in cement and mortar, while clear, translucent crystals have applications in gun sights and polarizing microscopes.
