Prognathodon represents an extinct genus of marine lizards from the mosasaur family that thrived during the Cretaceous period, approximately 100 to 66 million years ago. This genus possessed a notably robust and powerful jaw, capable of exerting considerable bite force through well-developed jaw muscles. Such adaptations made Prognathodon adept at preying on hard-shelled animals like ammonites, turtles, and shellfish. Its teeth were exceptionally strong, designed to crush protective shells and shear flesh, featuring serrations visible upon close examination. Additionally, all Prognathodon species exhibit sclerotic rings that help maintain corneal shape and support the sclera. A distinguishing feature of Prognathodon compared to other mosasaurs is its relatively limited number of teeth.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:
Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. The workers in Morocco do a very professional job of unearthing and preserving these natural treasures; however, commonly, natural cracks are visible on the surface. These are part of the natural beauty of the fossil and are not considered defects.
