This is a genuine fossil
100 million years old Cretaceous Age.
Well-preserved fossil shrimp (Carpopenaeus) embedded in matrix.
This remarkable specimen dates back to the Cretaceous period, approximately 100 million years ago. These fossil deposits were first referenced by the Greek historian Herodotus, who described them as “fish in the stones.” Unlike many lower-quality examples from this locality, this shrimp displays no color enhancement or restoration, preserving its authentic natural state.
The Cretaceous limestone deposits of Lebanon are renowned for their exceptional fossil diversity. Fossils from these deposits rival those of Solnhofen, Germany, sharing the unique characteristic of specimens often being the same color as the limestone matrix. The sites of Sahel Alma, Hajoula, and Haqel, Lebanon, date to the Cenomanian Stage of the Middle Cretaceous (around 100 million years ago) and are celebrated for their exquisitely preserved fossil fish. These deposits also yield a wide variety of beautifully preserved invertebrates, including shrimp and lobsters.
