Pterosaurs, members of the extinct clade Pterosauria, dominated the skies throughout the Mesozoic Era’s Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods, approximately 228 to 66 million years ago. They represent the earliest vertebrates to achieve powered flight, utilizing wings formed by a skin and muscle membrane extending from the ankles to an elongated fourth digit. Primitive species exhibited elongated, fully toothed jaws and long tails, whereas more derived taxa presented a reduced tail and, in some cases, toothlessness. Their skeletal structure featured hollow, pneumatized bones akin to birds, optimizing muscle attachment relative to weight. Additionally, they possessed delicate bone walls, a prominent keeled sternum for robust flight muscle attachment, and an expanded brain to facilitate complex aerial maneuvers.
