Pterosaurs were flying reptiles from the extinct group called Pterosauria that lived throughout the Mesozoic Era’s Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods, between about 228 and 66 million years ago. They were the first vertebrates to develop the ability to fly using powered flight. Their wings consisted of a thin membrane of skin, muscle, and other tissues, stretching from their ankles to an extended fourth finger. Early pterosaurs had long tails and jaws full of teeth, while later species had shorter tails and some lost their teeth entirely. Their bones were hollow and filled with air, similar to birds, which made their skeletons lighter yet strong for muscle attachment. Additionally, they had a large, keeled breastbone for flight muscles and a larger brain to manage complex flying movements.
