The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia) is one of the most extraordinary tree genera known from the fossil record. First appearing during the age of dinosaurs, Metasequoia once formed vast forests across the Northern Hemisphere. For much of modern history, it was known only from fossils and believed to be extinct, earning it the nickname “fossil tree.”
In a remarkable scientific discovery, living specimens were found in central China in 1944, confirming the survival of this ancient lineage. Both fossil and modern Dawn Redwoods share the rare trait of being deciduous conifers, shedding their needles seasonally.
Today, Metasequoia is a fast-growing ornamental tree with a graceful pyramidal form, reaching heights of up to 120 feet. A Metasequoia fossil specimen is prized by collectors, educators, and museums for its evolutionary significance, providing a direct link between prehistoric forests and living trees and showcasing one of the most remarkable botanical survivals in Earth’s history.
