Pterosaurs were flying reptiles that belonged to the extinct group Pterosauria and thrived throughout the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods of the Mesozoic Era, approximately 228 to 66 million years ago. They are recognized as the earliest vertebrates to develop powered flight. Their wings consisted of a membrane made of skin, muscle, and other tissues extending from the ankles to an elongated fourth finger. Early species featured long jaws filled with teeth and lengthy tails, whereas later species had shorter tails and some lost their teeth. Pterosaur bones were hollow and air-filled, similar to birds, allowing for greater muscle attachment relative to their light skeletal structure. Their thin bone walls, large keeled breastbone for flight muscles, and an enlarged brain supported the complex coordination needed for flight.
