The Cardiospermum genus mainly includes herbaceous vines. One current species is regarded as an invasive in the Southern USA! This specimen is well-preserved, showcasing a deep, dark chocolate hue.
Fossil remains are plentiful in the shales from the early Middle Eocene period of the Green River Formation across Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming. Clearly, this family played a significant role in the vegetation around the large lakes where these shales were formed.
