100 million years old Cretaceous Age.

Here we see a beautifully preserved fossil Shrimp (Carpopenaeus) embedded in the matrix. This specimen dates back to the Cretaceous Period, approximately 100 million years ago. Interestingly, these fossil deposits were first recorded by the Greek historian Herodotus, who described them as “fish in the stones.” Unlike many other specimens from this site that may have undergone restoration or color enhancement, this shrimp remains entirely natural, showcasing its authentic preservation and fine detail.

The Cretaceous limestone deposits of Lebanon are among the world’s most remarkable fossil sites, renowned for their richness and diversity of ancient life. These fossils rival those of Solnhofen, Germany, in both quality and preservation. A distinctive feature of the Lebanese fossils is that they often share the same color as the surrounding limestone, blending naturally with the matrix. The deposits of Sahel Alma, Hajoula, and Haqel date to the Cenomanian Stage of the Middle Cretaceous, around 100 million years ago. While these sites are celebrated for their exquisitely preserved fish, they also yield an impressive variety of invertebrates, including beautifully fossilized shrimp and lobsters.
