100 million years old Cretaceous Age.

This beautifully preserved fossil shrimp (Carpopenaeus) is embedded within its natural limestone matrix, dating back to the Cretaceous period, approximately 100 million years ago. These fossil deposits were first described by the Greek historian Herodotus, who famously referred to them as “fish in the stones.” Unlike many specimens from the same locality that show signs of enhancement or restoration, this shrimp remains in its authentic, unaltered state, highlighting the delicate detail and natural beauty preserved through time.

The Cretaceous limestone deposits of Lebanon are renowned for their exceptional richness and diversity, preserving a fascinating array of ancient marine life. The fossils found here are so remarkable that they are often compared to those from Solnhofen, Germany, another world-famous fossil site. A distinctive feature of these Lebanese fossils is that they frequently share the same coloration as the surrounding limestone matrix, giving them a subtle and natural beauty. The deposits of Sahel Alma, Hajoula, and Haqel date to the Cenomanian Stage of the Middle Cretaceous, around 100 million years ago. While these sites are celebrated for their exquisitely preserved fish fossils, they also yield a remarkable diversity of invertebrates, including shrimp and lobsters.
