Pterosaurs, members of the extinct clade Pterosauria, thrived throughout the Mesozoic Era—spanning the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods approximately 228 to 66 million years ago. They represent the earliest vertebrates to achieve powered flight. Their wings consisted of a membrane of skin, muscle, and connective tissues extending from the ankles to an elongated fourth digit. Primitive species featured long, toothed jaws and extended tails, whereas later taxa exhibited reduced tails and, in some cases, complete tooth loss. The bones of pterosaurs were hollow and pneumatized, similar to avian skeletons, which increased muscle attachment surfaces relative to skeletal weight. These bones often had extremely thin walls, and the species possessed a large, keeled sternum for the attachment of powerful flight muscles, as well as an enlarged brain that facilitated the coordination of complex flight mechanics.
