Pterosaurs were flying reptiles from the extinct Pterosauria group that thrived throughout the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods of the Mesozoic Era, approximately 228 to 66 million years ago. They represent the earliest vertebrates to develop powered flight. Their wings consisted of a membrane of skin, muscle, and other tissues extending from their ankles to a greatly lengthened fourth finger. Early species had long jaws full of teeth and long tails, while later species had much shorter tails, and some lost their teeth entirely. Their bones were hollow and filled with air, similar to birds, allowing for strong muscle attachment without added weight. These delicate bone walls supported a large, keeled breastbone for flight muscles and a well-developed brain that managed complex flying skills.
