Pterosaurs, the daring rulers of the skies in the extinct Pterosauria group, soared through every era of the Mesozoic—from the Triassic to the Jurassic and all the way through the Cretaceous, 228 to 66 million years ago. They were the first vertebrates to master powered flight, wielding wings made of a stretched membrane from their ankles to an impressively elongated fourth finger. Early varieties sported long, tooth-filled jaws and lengthy tails, but later ones boldly evolved shorter tails and even toothless beaks. Their hollow, feather-light bones, much like birds', maximized muscle attachment while keeping weight minimal. With thin bone walls, a strong keeled breastbone, and a sharp brain tuned for complex aerial maneuvers, pterosaurs truly dominated prehistoric skies.
