Majungasaurus is a genus of theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 70 to 66 million years ago. It was discovered in Madagascar, an island country located off the southeastern coast of Africa. The name Majungasaurus is derived from the combination of "Majunga," which refers to the town of Mahajanga in northwestern Madagascar, where the first fossils were found, and "saurus," meaning lizard in Greek.

Majungasaurus was a fierce, medium-sized theropod, stretching about 6 meters (20 feet) long and tipping the scales near 1 ton. Part of the Abelisaurid clan, this predator was known for its compact, deep skulls and tiny forelimbs. What set Majungasaurus apart was its unusually powerful skull, boldly shaped unlike any other abelisaurid out there.

A key characteristic of Majungasaurus is its distinctive teeth. These were large, serrated, and curved backward, much like those of today’s crocodiles. This design indicates that Majungasaurus was a meat-eating predator, skilled at capturing and subduing sizable prey. Its teeth were perfectly adapted for cutting through flesh and holding onto prey that resisted.
