Dromaeosaurids were a family of bird-like theropod dinosaurs, typically small to medium-sized feathered carnivores that thrived during the Cretaceous Period. The name Dromaeosauridae means “running lizards,” derived from the Greek words dromeus (runner) and sauros (lizard).

Commonly known as raptors, a term popularized by the film Jurassic Park, some species even include the word “raptor” in their scientific names, highlighting their bird-like traits and agile nature.

Fossils of dromaeosaurids have been discovered across the globe — in North America, Europe, Africa, Japan, China, Mongolia, Madagascar, Argentina, and even Antarctica. They first appeared during the Middle Jurassic Period and survived until the end of the Cretaceous, existing for more than 100 million years before becoming extinct during the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event.

Although no complete body fossils have been found from the Middle Jurassic, isolated fossil teeth confirm that dromaeosaurs were already present during this early stage of dinosaur evolution.
