Late Cretaceous, 67 Million Years Old
Name: Nanotryannus
Type: Carnivore
Size: 5 meters in length.
Nanotyrannus, derived from the term 'dwarf tyrant,' represents a contentious genus within the tyrannosaurid clade, potentially constituting a juvenile form of Tyrannosaurus. This genus is known solely from a modest skull dating from approximately 72.1 to 66 million years ago. Distinct from the adult Tyrannosaurus rex, Nanotyrannus exhibits a greater number of teeth in both the upper and lower jaws, alongside the presence of fused cranial bones. Specifically, it possessed 14 to 15 teeth per side in the maxilla and 16 per side in the mandible, in contrast to the 11 to 12 and 11 to 14 tooth positions found in T. rex. Behavioral evidence suggests these predators may have hunted collaboratively in pairs or packs to subdue formidable Late Cretaceous prey such as ceratopsians and hadrosaurs.
