Majungasaurus is a genus of theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 70 to 66 million years ago. It was discovered in Madagascar, an island country located off the southeastern coast of Africa. The name Majungasaurus is derived from the combination of "Majunga," which refers to the town of Mahajanga in northwestern Madagascar, where the first fossils were found, and "saurus," meaning lizard in Greek.

Majungasaurus was an impressive medium-sized theropod dinosaur, stretching about 6 meters (20 feet) long and weighing nearly 1 ton. It belonged to the fascinating group called abelisaurids, known for their short, deep skulls and tiny forelimbs. What really sets Majungasaurus apart is its especially strong skull with a distinctive shape unlike any other abelisaurid—an exciting feature for dinosaur enthusiasts!

A defining characteristic of Majungasaurus is its dentition. The dinosaur possessed large, serrated teeth that curved posteriorly, resembling those of contemporary crocodilians. This dental structure indicates a carnivorous lifestyle, enabling Majungasaurus to subdue relatively large prey. Its teeth were adapted for efficiently slicing flesh and maintaining a firm grip on struggling targets.
