Dromaeosaurids were a family of bird-like theropod dinosaurs, typically small to medium-sized feathered carnivores that thrived during the Cretaceous Period. The name Dromaeosauridae means “running lizards,” derived from the Greek words dromeus (runner) and sauros (lizard).

In informal use, they are often referred to as raptors, a term popularized by the film Jurassic Park. Some genera even include “raptor” in their scientific names, highlighting their bird-like traits and agile hunting abilities.

Fossils of dromaeosaurids have been discovered across the world — in North America, Europe, Africa, Japan, China, Mongolia, Madagascar, Argentina, and even Antarctica. They first appeared in the Middle Jurassic Period and survived until the end of the Cretaceous, existing for over 100 million years before disappearing during the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event.

Although no complete body fossils from the Middle Jurassic have been found, isolated fossil teeth confirm that dromaeosaurs were already present at that early stage of dinosaur evolution.
