The Abelisauridae, meaning "Abel's lizards," are a family of ceratosaurian theropod dinosaurs that lived during the Cretaceous period, often known as the Kem Kem Abelisaur. The genus Abelisaurus was first named and described by Argentine scientists in 1985, marking the discovery of the earliest member of this carnivorous group. Abelisaurs were primarily found across the southern continents, including South America and Africa. They are considered medium to large theropods. Fossils from Morocco suggest these dinosaurs weighed around 2,000 kg and were basal members of their group, sharing their environment with other large predators such as Carcharodontosaurus and Spinosaurus.
